The children's program (7-12yrs) at Verbeke Martial Arts
Academy uses the same curriculum as the adult program with a strong
emphasis placed upon developing focus, self-discipline, willpower
and a confident spirit.
Focus is cultivated through precision of
movement and mental alertness. It manifests itself in class in two
ways: one, the quality of physical techniques which includes timing,
force, speed, stance, hip movement and aim; and two, the ability to
remain mentally alert for the duration of the entire class.
Self-discipline
is the ability to exert one hundred percent of your energy to the task
at hand, whether that be a physically challenging jump spin kick or
the mental focus required to learn a new thirty-five movement Hyung.
This requires students to have a high willpower and the motivation to
succeed. This manifests itself in class as sustained effort even
though an instructor is not directly observing their technique.

A confident spirit is very important to a
martial artist. It includes overcoming the fear of performing
techniques in front of other students and instructors, engaging in
free sparring, and acting in accordance with the principles of Tang
Soo Do, which requires students to stand up for what is right,
not what is easy.
